About Me

The interface between man and machine is my passion. Focusing on the user first, I develop interaction concepts which break down usability barriers and let the function and essence of an application or product come into its own. Harmonizing feasibility, viability and usability at the same time is a personal challenge for me.

I usually follow a tried-and-true design process in most of my work. With my experience I am able to take care of the entire interaction design process, including the development of functional prototypes as well as screen designs at production level.

In the "fields of work" section you'll find areas of work that I'm specialized in. You can either book me for one of those, or ask if I might help you with your project in other ways. I am happy to send you my resume on request. Due to some of my work being covered by NDAs, my project example pages are incomplete. I can however walk you through selected work in person.

Read about my background

Background

Most of the screen designs and print layouts on this site are from my first freelancing phase. Back then I gained extensive knowledge in prepress and web design. Not surprisingly, I spent a lot of time using pertinent design software, thereby increasing my proficiency in them.

«Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.» —Steve Jobs

I studied Media System Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt. Media System Design is an interdisciplinary study course which consists of the three fields of Informatics, Economics and Design. My diploma thesis (german only) is titled "Online knowledge module for the Bible" and deals with the question if an intuitive, collaborative approach to this treasure trove of knowledge and wisdom can be found by an online community which is built around it.

In the department "Interactive Multimedia Appliances" of the Fraunhofer IGD I was responsible for Interaction Design. The primary focus of my work was in the fields of Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Assisted Living.

When I'm not working, I have a keen interest in the cultures of other countries, Ireland, nature, computer games, movies, art in general and photography.

Fields of work

I am currently available as a freelancer in different roles, as required. On a strategic level:

Media System DesignYou have a great idea, or just a spark of inspiration, but you don't know how it can be developed into something tangible, viable and feasible? My services comprise planning, concept and realisation up to the development of a working prototype – as a consultant as well as embedded in a project team.
User Experience DesignUxD covers all aspects of the person's experience with a system, be it product, application or service, looking at the user him/herself, the system and the context of use. I follow a user centered design approach, described here, to design a holistic experience, encompassing all of the parts of the process.

I can assist you in different portions/parts of the design process as well.

UX Audit / ResearchA thorough analysis of what your application "feels" like in the user's perception and the value generated. Test results are used to infer concrete recommendations and optimisations for an existing design, in order to ensure an optimal user experience.
User Interface DesignThis is about the design of single interface elements (using wireframes, screens, flows) – how an application or product interacts with the user on a per-screen basis.
Visual Design and Screen designVisual design is about the "look" in "look-and-feel": Style, mood and graphic elements, in different stages of refinement, up to a production-ready design. For parts or the entire product, service or application.
Interaction DesignThe "feel" in "look-and-feel": Interaction design brings user and system behaviour into focus, how certain parts interact, and how information is represented and interacted with. IxD ensures satisfactory use in all system states and a better experience as a whole.

Does not fit or have any questions? I'm happy to make you an offer on an individual basis and/or advise you without any obligation.
